3 NEW CONNECTED STAGES (4 with the existing one)
FLEXIBLE & FUNCTIONAL
TRANSPARENT & COZY
600 m2: COMPACT BUILDING
THE YARD CONNECTS the NEW & the EXISTING buildings

AROUND A CIRCLE
The compact 600 m2 theater comprises of 3 interconnected stage spaces and joins directly to the lobby of the existing theater and its service areas. The yard links the new and existing buildings, creating a flexible and functional complex which is also transparent and cozy. At the centre of the complex, the RING of the canopy serves as focal point, uniting all four stages. Building on the symbolism of the circle, an experimental canopy can be installed each year as a PLUG-IN, expressing the current artistic vision and intent of the puppetry arts centre. Starshade – an unfurling origami canopy, developed for NASA, is shown at the moment.

The PUBLIC SPACE is vibrant and welcoming. All interior zones, incl. the new main hall and the lobby of the existing building, spill out into the open yard. Acting as the “face” of the theater, the yard doubles as shaded meeting space and outdoor exhibition. The height allows for hanging billboards advertising current events, thereby changing the surroundings.

To make open air shows possible, a landscape formation at the front entry provides an acoustic barrier between the yard and the street. Similar formations define each corner of the building, offering benches and serving as a buffer to street noise.

The facade of the existing theatre is renovated in concrete render or monochrome stone cladding in order to unite it with the new building and add monumentality and a bit of enigma. This solid and timeless shell carries through, wrapping around the opaque zones of the new building. In contrast, the new public and vibrant zones are transparent and full of light, clad in glass and metal, providing alternate multifunctional spaces throughout the complex.

The interior is FUNCTIONAL, LIGHT & SIMPLE, with materials and accents that bring in COMFORT, encourage communication and connection and inspire creativity and joy.
